Cyber Resilience for SMEs – Supporting the Skills Demands of Small Business

This is the second event in our series of techBREK network & learn events, delivered in partnership with Mastercard and taking place the first Tuesday of each month in September, October, November and December at Mastercard Dublin Tech Hub, South County Business Park, Dublin. The techBREK series are hosted by Sabrina Staunton, Director of the Mastercard Dublin Tech Hub and an award winning leader in the financial services sector, who will guide us on a thought-provoking and insightful journey this Autumn.

Cybercrime is the number one threat when it comes to financial crime in Ireland. This is particularly true for small businesses; with over 43% of cyber-attacks targeting those businesses which are seen as low-hanging fruit for criminals due to their limited resources and funding. The pandemic accelerated the shift to online trading and, as small and micro businesses make the digital transition, it is essential they are equipped with the necessary tools and knowledge to protect themselves from a cyber incident. A survey carried out by iReach Insights in 2023 found that while over 75% of Irish SMEs agree a secure online presence is necessary, only 20% are aware of the measures needed for cyber resilience and over 85% of small businesses do not have a cybersecurity plan in place, due to lack of funding (47%), skills (50%) and low awareness of potential risks (36%). This session will combine practical insights into how small businesses can take steps to protect themselves with a broader examination of the threat landscape and challenges facing Ireland’s small business community.
