Welcome back to our last article in this short series focusing in on the new Master’s in Leadership Innovation and Technology. In Part 1 and Part 2 we discussed the 6 modules covered in the MSc programme in more detail. In Part 3, we’d like to tell you a little more about the research project as it’s an area candidates are keen to learn more about when applying.

When completing the applied research project there is very little time required for the participant to actually be on campus. This allows for much greater flexibility for the learner in terms of a balancing work and personal commitments.

The MSc Applied Research Project

The research project is much more significant than would be typically in a master’s programme and it is effectively worth twice the credits at 60 ECTS with the modules totalling 30 ECTS. The approach taken here is very much in line with what the ICT industry requires in practice. In addition to developing leaders, the course aims to upskill real experts in their chosen research area. The research project allows sufficient time and structure so that the learner can complete a significant piece of work-based research – so that each participant can develop a deep level of expertise. And as a result of this process, he/she can better shape a career path within their organisation.

This research project is a fantastic opportunity to influence the next steps in your career.

Project Stages

This is a very structured piece of work and it has 5 distinct stages to be followed;

Project Impact Plan

A work-based approach is being taken and the idea is to deliver real impact in a commercial environment. As part of the research project, participants are required to create a project impact plan. This will involve engaging the relevant stakeholders within the organisation or within a related environment that might be affected. This is done in order to enable the project outcomes to be implemented within the organisation. The Impact Plan makes the dissertation very meaningful – it’s  not a standalone abstract piece of work but a project that is of real value to the organisation.

Delivering projects that have an impact within a business are of significant value to the learner and the process can help participants achieve a higher profile internally, thereby advancing career progression.

As the learner is conducting this work, they will have the benefit of research and project training and the support of an experienced mentor.

Project Thesis

The final stage of the research project sees the completion of a project thesis. The learner will complete this with the support and advice of their mentor.
