As cloud computing continues to expand, the integration of sustainability is no longer just an option – it is a business necessity.
We recently (January 2026) held a Virtual Open Day to discuss our brand-new MSc in Sustainable Cloud Computing, developed in collaboration between Technology Ireland ICT Skillnet and TU Dublin. We were also joined by guest industry speakers from Liberty IT, who shared practical and professional insights under the topic of ‘Architecting the Future: Sustainable Cloud, Smart Enterprises’.
If you missed the live session, you can watch the full recording below and read on for the key takeaways regarding the programme’s industry-led curriculum, funding eligibility, and unique delivery model.
Why Sustainable Cloud Computing? (The Industry View)
Experts from Liberty IT highlighted that sustainable software engineering is now a strategic priority for global enterprises. The programme was co-designed with industry to ensure graduates can deliver a competitive advantage through:
- Cost Reduction: Leveraging frameworks like AWS Well-Architected to correlate sustainability with financial efficiency.
- Regulatory Readiness: Getting ahead of global regulations regarding carbon footprints and energy provisioning
- Green Software Principles: Focusing on energy efficiency, hardware efficiency, and carbon awareness
The guest speakers from Liberty IT noted that the curriculum on the MSc in Sustainable Cloud Computing focuses on the entire Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), helping students become “better engineers and better humans” by making more mindful resource decisions
Built for Working Professionals
David White, the Program Director at TU Dublin, outlined the four pillars of the course: sustainability, efficiency, resilience, and security. The curriculum is delivered over two years and includes modules such as:
- Cloud Architecture & Digital Technology Strategy
- IT Infrastructure and Automation (including virtualization and container orchestration)
- Sustainable Data Engineering & AI Operations
- A 13-week Research Project: Where students can tackle real-world problems, such as evaluating the carbon footprint of different cloud vendors or using AI to predict the cleanest regions for code deployment.
This Master’s is specifically designed for those already in the workforce.
- 100% Online & Part-Time: Classes typically take place two nights a week (6:30 PM – 9:30 PM).
- No Final Exams: Assessment is entirely through Continuous Assessment (CA), such as research reports, system demonstrations, and recorded presentations.
- Industry Expertise: The course features guest lecturers who bring “war stories” and real-world experience into the virtual classroom
